BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : More Testing for Janicki's Injured Arm

April 12, 1993|ELLIOTT TEAFORD

Pitcher Pete Janicki, the Angels' No. 1 draft pick in 1992, had his broken ulna bone examined by Dr. Lewis Yocum Sunday. The full extent of the injury is still to be determined. Yocum did not rule out surgery, but wants to compare a current Magnetic Resonance Imaging test with past ones before deciding.

Janicki, who broke the bone near his right (pitching) elbow while making his professional debut for Class-A Palm Springs Friday, suffered a stress fracture in the same area last year. The injury forced him to withdraw from the Olympic team tryouts and sidelined him for the 1992 professional season.

Third baseman Kelly Gruber, on the 60-day disabled list after undergoing shoulder surgery, will miss the club's first trip to continue physical therapy. Right-handed pitcher Scott Lewis, on the 15-day disabled list with a bruised elbow, will make the trip . . . Gary Gaetti, who started for the first time this season and went two for four Saturday night, was the designated hitter Sunday. "Baseball is fun again (for Gaetti)," Rodgers said. "He's accepted a part-time role and wants to contribute, that's the key."
