Boeing Offering New 737 Designs: Boeing Co. said it has developed designs for a new family of 737 jets, with bigger wings and new engines, which analysts say could better compete with European rival Airbus Industrie's aircraft. "We've spent the last two years gathering requirements from our customers for the next-generation 737," said Steve Smith, spokesman for Boeing's commercial airplane group. "We have not identified a launch date yet," he added, noting that the Seattle-based jet maker has "talked in broad terms about delivery starting in the 1996-98 time frame." Boeing said it has been sharing four designs for the "737-X" family with airlines around the world, seeking input.
