Region : Several Public Schools Nominated for State Award

April 15, 1993

Several local elementary schools are among 206 nominated for recognition as California Distinguished Schools.

The state-sponsored award, begun in 1986, honors outstanding public schools. Elementary and secondary schools are recognized in alternate years.

Area schools nominated include Woodruff Elementary in the Bellflower Unified School District; Gauldin and Ward schools in the Downey Unified School District; Kettering and Cleveland schools in the Long Beach Unified School District; Garfield Elementary in the Montebello Unified School District; Glazier and Gardenhill schools in the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District, and Los Cerritos Elementary in the Paramount Unified School District.

Schools are eligible if their programs have been honored recently by the California Department of Education or the California Alliance for Elementary Education, an informal coalition of state schools. Schools also could be nominated if their students performed well on statewide standardized tests.

State evaluators will visit each school and rate their programs, the image they project, and their ability to serve students and their families.

The winners will be honored in a May 20 ceremony in Anaheim.
