Festival to Emphasize Latino Arts

April 15, 1993

An exhibition of Chicano art kicks off several free events during Cal Lutheran University's Sixth Annual Festival de Encuentros, dedicated to increasing the cultural and social awareness of the Latino community in Ventura County.

Works sponsored by Self-Help Graphics/Galeria Otra Vez are on display in the CLU Pearson Library through April 23. And Latino/Chicano films will be presented Monday and Tuesday at 8 p.m. in the CLU Preus-Brandt Forum.

On Wednesday at 8 p.m. in the gym/auditorium, the university bands will perform Carlos Chavez's "Symphonia India." A Latin-jazz finale will feature Grammy-nominated percussionist Poncho Sanchez.

KNBC-TV news broadcaster Linda Alvarez will speak April 22 at 11 a.m. in the Preus-Brandt Forum.

On April 23, a fiesta picnic with entertainment by Latino students will be held in Kingsman Park. And at 8 p.m., El Teatro Campesino, America's premiere Chicano theater company, will perform in the Preus-Brandt Forum.

Admission is free to all events, but seating is limited. Meals can be purchased at the picnic. For more information, call the CLU Office of Educational Equity, 493-3302.
