Outside Looking In

April 18, 1993| Outside Looking In is an occasional look at how Central Los Angeles is portrayed in the news media outside the area.

The Wall Street Journal published a front-page story April 8 on West Adams, describing the neighborhood as "more racially and culturally eclectic than most in the city."

"The existence of diverse neighborhoods such as this is largely overlooked during this time of worry . . . ," the article said.

"The media are portraying this city as a racially tense metropolis with tight borders separating warring groups . . . But here in West Adams, and some areas like it, the reality is a successful--if often mercurial and always delicate--experiment in multiculturalism."
