No Oscars for Political Views

April 18, 1993

ABC's coverage of the Academy Awards ceremonies (March 29) was excellent. The only downside was the unexpected political ramblings of Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins and Richard Gere. They were asked to present an Oscar, not make a speech with their viewpoints. Clint Eastwood did have the platform to make a speech when he won for director and best picture, yet he did not use that time to spout his conservative political views.

I suggest Ms. Sarandon, Mr. Robbins and Mr. Gere take a cue from Ross Perot: If you want to express your political views, pay for your own TV time.
