Commentator in the Chair: Sometimes Life's Not Fair

April 19, 1993

In response to Bill Press' Counterpunch, "Hey, Howard--I'm Supposed to Be Biased!" (April 12):

Yes, Mr. Press, life is not fair. Rush Limbaugh gets hours of air time to your few minutes and you can't see why you should be fired for taking the job of chair of the California Democratic Party. After all, you cry, Limbaugh is the "unofficial" mouthpiece of the Republican Party.

This may seem like quibbling to you, but Limbaugh is not, as you say, the official mouthpiece of the Republican Party. You, now the official mouthpiece of the California Democratic Party, are employed and showcased on a news program at KCOP-TV. Accepting the chair of a political party goes beyond personal bias and has no place being showcased on a news program.

I am a longtime Democrat and have enjoyed your excellent, thoughtful commentary. However, you have compromised your position as news commentator and should resign.
