3 Russian Monks Stabbed to Death

April 20, 1993| Associated Press

MOSCOW — Three monks preparing for an Easter morning service were stabbed to death at their monastery in central Russia, the Itar-Tass news agency reported Monday.

Police arrested a man with a history of psychiatric problems who was expelled from the monastery last year, the agency said.

The 15th-Century monastery, one of the most famous in Russia, is near Kaluga, a city 83 miles southwest of Moscow.

The Russian Orthodox Church celebrated Easter on Sunday, a week later than most Christian churches.
