Show Penalties for Graffiti

April 21, 1993

I often read about the apprehension of the graffiti vandals that plague our cities, but I never read about what happens to them after they are caught.

If we really want to get rid of the problem, we should make sure all potential vandals are aware of the penalties if they are caught. The restitution or punishment meted out should be published along with the name of the judge presiding over the matter.

We do not advertise the effect graffiti removal has on city finances. While these costs are small relative to the overall city budget, they are significant when one considers other uses for the money. There should be posted a monthly tally of the money spent on cleaning up graffiti at every school. These costs should be discussed with the students each time a desired program or piece of equipment cannot be funded.
