SIMI VALLEY : Volunteers Needed to Clear Hiking Trails

April 22, 1993|BRENDA DAY

Volunteers are needed this weekend to help blaze trails on 71 acres recently acquired by the Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District.

The Rancho Simi Trail Blazers, a group formed in December to promote and enhance hiking in the Simi Valley area, will direct trail cutting on the Hummingbird Creek property from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Tools and training will be provided to volunteers who show up at Kuehner Drive north of the Simi Valley Freeway, officials said. A potluck picnic will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday at Rancho Tapo Community Park at Lemon Drive and Avenida Simi.

The land was deeded to the district by the developer of Paragon Homes, a 14-acre, 24-unit housing subdivision approved for construction nearby.

The city required the dedication because the land is considered environmentally sensitive.

The 4-foot-wide, quarter-mile trail will cut from Kuehner Drive to the top of the creek, officials said.
