BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJORS : Valenzuela Sharp in Minor League Start

April 23, 1993| Associated Press

Fernando Valenzuela gave up one run in six innings Thursday in his final minor league assignment before returning to the majors.

Valenzuela, sent to the minors April 15 so he could get some work, gave up four hits and did not walk a batter for the double-A Bowie Baysox in their Eastern League game against the Binghamton Mets.

He will next pitch for the Baltimore Orioles on Monday night against the Chicago White Sox.

Rookie Scott Pose, the first batter in Florida Marlin history, was demoted after going hitless in his last 16 at-bats. Pose led the Marlins in hitting during spring training and was the opening-day center fielder. But he is hitting .195.

Deion Sanders has the highest batting average among Atlanta Brave outfielders, but the fewest at-bats, and his agent says it may be because he has not signed a long-term deal with the club.

General Manager John Schuerholz said there is no conscious effort to keep Sanders out of the lineup. Sanders can leave the team to join the Atlanta Falcons' training camp after his contract expires July 31.
