Monrovia : Increased Fees Studied

April 25, 1993

The City Council this week will consider increasing the cost of parking tickets, building fees and recreation classes.

Consultants to the city, Management Services Institute of Anaheim, say increasing a variety of fees would raise $4 million to cover the cost of providing services such as recreation classes.

Fees from recreation classes cover 28% of their cost and taxpayers subsidize the remaining portion--$50,000 a year, according to the consultants' report. Likewise, raising the cost of parking citations from $15 to $22 would cover the cost of processing tickets.

Finance Director Ken Nordhoff said it is unlikely that the city will increase all fees. However, he said, fee increases could help make up $650,000 in property tax revenue that the state might take away from the city.

"If the state swipes another $650,000, we have to increase fees or decrease services," he said.

The City Council has scheduled public budget study sessions for Tuesday and Thursday.
