L.A. Election Results

April 25, 1993

Regarding the failure of Amendment 1 to put 1,000 additional police on the streets:

As a homeowner who has seen his taxes rise more than 20% over the past few years despite Prop. 13, I can tell you that most property owners will resist being the ones singled out to pay for most propositions that are placed on the ballot. It is time that a more creative approach is taken to paying for needed public services.

Why do we not look at what segments of society most require police services and tax those segments? For example, a large part of police services are used for controlling and ticketing traffic offenders. Why not earmark an additional tax on vehicle registration, gasoline, auto repairs or other related services and products in L.A. County to pay in part for additional police?
