Playing in her first match since Feb. 21, when she was sidelined because of a viral infection, Monica Seles easily defeated Sweden's Maria Strandlund, 6-2, 6-2, Tuesday in the first round of a tournament at Hamburg, Germany.

Seles, the world's No. 1-ranked women's player, kept the pressure on Strandlund throughout with her powerful ground strokes, but her layoff showed as she made several mistakes on easy shots.

Seles will next face Patricia Tarbani of Argentina, who defeated Germany's Silke Frankl, 6-4, 6-1.

Franco Davin, defeating Boris Becker for the second time in as many weeks, upset the German, 6-2, 6-2, in the opening round of the City of Madrid Grand Prix.

Davin, from Argentina, is ranked 61st by the ATP, and Becker is ranked fourth.

In the day's other key first-round match, top-seeded Stefan Edberg defeated Spaniard Jose Antonio Conde, 6-0, 6-3.

Davin outran the faltering Becker, who has been troubled by a viral infection for more than two months. Becker, guilty of several unforced errors, drew numerous catcalls from the crowd at the end.

"They came to see Boris Becker play good tennis and not see him lose," said Becker, who was defeated by Davin in a second-round match two weeks ago at Nice, France. "The reaction is normal."

Top-seeded Petr Korda of the Czech Republic defeated defending champion Mangnus Larrson of Sweden, 7-5, 6-4, in the first round of a tournament at Munich, avenging a loss in last year's final.
