Long Beach : Homeless Appeal for More Aid, Have Mock Funeral

April 29, 1993

More than 20 homeless people and their advocates had a mock funeral at the Long Beach City Council meeting Tuesday, mourning the death of an unidentified transient whose body was recovered last week from a railroad trestle spanning the Los Angeles River.

The group called for more services for the homeless.

"No one wants to die cold, alone and afraid," activist Norma Mower said.

The group also protested a city law that prohibits the homeless from sleeping in public parks and other areas.

The City Council took no action in response to the demonstration. But the council made technical changes to Long Beach's anti-camping ordinance in response to a recent court decision. The law still bans sleeping in public places.
