The Monster Chronicles

May 02, 1993

I, too, grew up in South-Central, only to me it was home. And surprise!--it wasn't a struggle saying no to drugs and gangs when you believed in yourself. And there are many more like me, young people who work hard in school, pay attention to parents, even go to the prom and work part-time at McDonald's.

The sad irony is that our type is in the majority, and our biggest struggle is not against the gangs or drugs but trying to overcome being stereotyped as Li'l Monsters. It's time for Hollywood executives and Madison Avenue publishers to realize that there are more than Monsters N the Hood. There are also living, breathing Angels, and it's about time we start making them huge.
