Altadena : Road Widening Criticized

May 06, 1993

A proposal to widen parts of Altadena Drive has angered some area residents, who say it will increase traffic along the long, well-traveled residential road.

The county Public Works Department has proposed widening the road in some sections and narrowing it in others to make its width consistent.

The width of the road between Maiden Lane and Allen Avenue would be 40 feet with the exception of a stretch east of Hollister Avenue where, to preserve trees, it would be 36 feet.

At a community meeting Tuesday, public works officials told residents that the alterations, which must be approved by county supervisors, would make the road safer.

Town Council member Leatrice Gloria Erlander said the changes will lead to more traffic and damage the tranquil atmosphere of the area.

Resident Robert Weaver, a candidate for Town Council, said members of the community were not consulted about the proposed changes, which he believes are needless.
