Marine Dies, Another Hurt in Exercise

May 07, 1993

CAMP PENDLETON — A 20-year-old Marine was killed and a second Marine was injured Thursday night when their vehicle overturned on the beach during a routine training exercise, authorities said.

The Marines, whose names were withheld pending notification of relatives, were riding in an amphibious assault vehicle when the accident occurred at 7:23 p.m., Sgt. Doug Anderson said.

The Marines were both students assigned to Assault Amphibian School at the base. They were learning to drive the vehicles, which can float and attack at sea but are also mobile on land.

The accident occurred on an unidentified stretch of beach on the base. The victim, who had been in the corps for at least six months, died at the scene.

The injured 19-year-old was flown by helicopter to the base hospital, where he was treated and released.

Anderson said he knows of no other similar accidents involving an amphibious assault vehicle on the base this year.

The accident is under investigation by military authorities.
