Spielberg's 'List'

May 23, 1993

Mercy! We just got through the media barrage focused on the opening of the National Holocaust Museum, which for some reason is firmly planted in our nation's capital, then comes a Calendar cover trumpeting news that a Spielberg Holocaust epic in 70-millimeter and Dolby surround is bearing down on us.

Frankly, I and all my friends are sick of hearing about Auschwitz. I was born in England in 1939 and for more than two years was subjected to nightly bombing as a child. Guess what, I'm over it! When I say that this subject is old and tired, the immediate response is "we must never forget." How can anyone forget with this seemingly endless bombardment?

I am not in any way anti-Semitic or anti-anything. However, I am opposed to the act of clinging morbidly to the past. Let us look to the future and let this go once and for all. How can there ever be healing if we keep scratching this wound? Please don't respond, "We must never forget."
