Moreno Argentin of Italy kept his 26-second lead in the Tour of Italy at Agrigento, Sicily, despite finishing 66th in the seventh stage of the 21-day cycling race.

Piotre Ugrumov of Latvia remained second and was followed by Maurizio Fondriest of Italy, 35 seconds back.

Bjarne Rjis of Denmark won the stage, beating Italians Michele Coppolillo and Giancarlo Perini in a final sprint. Rjis completed the 150-mile run in 6 hours 55 minutes 19 seconds.

Andrew Hampsten was the highest-placed American, finishing 56th in the stage to put him 40th in the overall standings. Greg LeMond was 138th overall.
