BOXING / EARL GUSTKEY : Heavyweight Activity Rides on Morrison

May 30, 1993|EARL GUSTKEY

The brothers Ruelas, Rafael and Gabe, are off the Tuesday USA Network show from Phoenix. Their manager, Dan Goossen, said Rafael (36-1) has a shoulder problem and Gabe has an injured wrist. . . . Jack Needleman, who is remodeling the Olympic Auditorium, said 2,000 of 8,900 new theater seats have arrived.

The bout between onetime Forum regular Daniel Zaragoza and Tracy Patterson on June 15 at Poughkeepsie, N.Y., for Patterson's junior-featherweight championship has been postponed indefinitely because of a shoulder injury suffered by Patterson. The two fought to a draw in France in December. . . . Heavyweights Alex Garcia and Mike Dixon meet on USA Network June 8 and heavyweights Michael Moorer and James Pritchard fight on June 22 on USA.

Mike Marley, manager of welterweight Derrell Coley, is still angry over his fighter getting a draw with Lonnie Smith at the May 18 Forum show. Smith, more famous to boxing followers for his running ability than for boxing prowess, typically avoided contact with Coley as much as possible and somehow got a draw.

Terry Norris' first fight for his new promoter, Don King, will be a June 19 San Diego Sports Arena/Showtime show, when he meets Troy Waters. . . . Mike Chavez, 15-year-old Narbonne High sophomore, won the district Junior Olympic lightweight title recently, advancing to the June 5-6 regionals at San Pedro.
