Santa Fe Springs : Students Barred From Wearing Baggy Clothes

June 03, 1993

Students in the Little Lake City School District won't be able to wear baggy clothes to school anymore.

School board members have unanimously approved a districtwide dress code banning oversized, baggy pants, excessively large shirts and jackets, military-style or steel-toed boots, oversized belts, initialized belt buckles, and caps and hats. Shirts with obscene language or language that promotes violence or graffiti also are prohibited.

Officials said the baggy style is being banned because it associates students with gang involvement. Students wearing the clothing may not necessarily be gang members but could nevertheless wind up victims of gang violence, officials added. They said the baggy clothes also provide hiding places for weapons and drugs.

"We want our kids to be safe on the streets and not be identified as possible gang members," Supt. John V. Pulice said.
