U.S., N. Korea Meet on Nuclear Pact

June 03, 1993| Times Wire Services

UNITED NATIONS — U.S. officials met with North Korean diplomats Wednesday to urge them to open their nuclear sites to international inspectors and not to withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

It was the first high-level meeting between the two sides in 16 months. The talks focused on North Korea's threat to withdraw in less than two weeks from the treaty, which is designed to halt the spread of nuclear weapons.

"We had seven hours of discussions but I cannot report any significant progress," Robert Gallucci, the head of the American delegation, told reporters. "We did, however, agree to meet again on Friday."
