UNITED NATIONS — Haiti's ousted president, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, will meet the army officer who deposed him for talks Sunday on restoring democracy in their homeland.

The chief U.N. envoy to Haiti, Dante Caputo, made the announcement, saying that talks between Aristide and Lt. Gen. Raoul Cedras will begin at 9 a.m. at U.N. headquarters.

In Haiti, meanwhile, police fired into the air and forced slum dwellers in the capital of Port-au-Prince to tear down posters of Aristide during a nationwide general strike called by his followers. The strike had only a partial turnout.

Caputo said Wednesday that he envisioned at least three days of talks with a goal of restoring Aristide to power and returning Haiti to democratic government.

Aristide, Haiti's first freely elected leader, was overthrown in a September, 1991, coup, seven months into his term.
