City Atty. James Hahn on Monday donated $5,000 each to two San Fernando Valley nonprofit groups, the proceeds consisting of money paid by a well-known rap musician as part of his sentence for breaking the jaw of a Woodland Hills man in a fight.
The checks were paid to Meet Every Need with Dignity (MEND), a Pacoima-based food bank for the homeless, and to the Haven Hills Battered Women's Shelter in Encino, according to Hahn's office.
Andre Young, 28, best known by his stage name of Dr. Dre and a former member of the rap group NWA, was required to pay the $10,000 as part of his sentencing in a battery case.
The city attorney's office had charged Young with punching a 22-year-old Woodland Hills man in the face and breaking his jaw during an incident outside Young's girlfriend's apartment.
