Whittier : Whittier School Board Chief

July 01, 1993

Quits for Health Reasons

President David R. Thomas has resigned from the Whittier City School District board, and his seat on the board will not be filled until the Nov. 2 election, officials said this week.

Thomas said in a letter he was resigning from the board on the advice of his doctor, according to Supt. Neal Avery, who said he did not know the nature of Thomas' illness. Thomas could not be reached for comment.

The board decided not to choose a new president when it met last month, Avery said. Vice President J. C. (Mac) McFarland will lead board meetings in Thomas' absence.

Thomas was elected to the five-member school board in 1989, and his term would have ended in November. Two other board members, McFarland and Owen Newcomer, face reelection in the fall.
