World IN BRIEF : GUATEMALA : President's Cousin Killed in Ambush

A cousin of President Ramiro de Leon Carpio and three others were shot to death in an ambush after a meeting with governing party allies, officials said. The Prensa Libre newspaper reported that masked gunmen surrounded Jorge Carpio Nicole's car, forced passengers to get out and then opened fire. Also killed were two officials with the National Center Union Party and a driver-bodyguard. Carpio Nicole was a founder and leader of the party and was narrowly defeated for the presidency in 1985 and 1990.
