TOKYO : G-7 Get-Together

July 06, 1993

The sluggish global economy is the backdrop for the 19th annual summit meeting of the world's major industrial nations, beginning Wednesday.

The three-day meeting of the so-called Group of Seven, or G-7, will ponder how to kick-start economies, help Russia's transition to capitalism and unblock the path to rewriting new rules on world trade. In the past, few breakthroughs have come at such summits. Nevertheless, President Clinton hopes to use the meeting to establish his foreign-policy credentials.

The other leaders attending the meeting will be French President Francois Mitterrand, German Chancellor Helmut Kohl and prime ministers Kiichi Miyazawa of Japan, John Major of Britain, Carlo Ciampi of Italy and Kim Campbell of Canada.
