Eagle Rock : Disposing of Tattered Flags

July 08, 1993

If the condition of your American flag made you ashamed to hang it outside July 4, the Cub Scouts of Pack 188 in Eagle Rock have a solution.

The Scouts are planning to have a traditional flag-burning ceremony, considered the proper way to dispose of tattered flags, Aug. 14.

The Scouts' flag-burning ceremony complies with the U.S. flag code adopted by Congress. The Cub Scouts and their leaders will destroy the flags in a "dignified way," said Marci Lawson, spokesperson for Pack 188.

Such efforts fill a need to retire worn-out flags properly, rather than stashing them in closets or displaying them in tattered condition, she said.

Information: Lawson at (213) 258-4016.
