Their Focus Was on Solutions

July 11, 1993

* What a unique presentation the Ventura County Edition of The Times gave its readers a couple of Sundays ago.

An entire page was devoted to a word-by-word discussion between two adroit congressman, namely Elton Gallegly and Anthony Beilenson. Their discussion was not fraught with recriminations of which party was responsible for the financial mess we are in, but rather a presentation of possible solutions.

Now we are getting somewhere when two politicians sit down and honestly try to find remedies.

I do not know as much about Beilenson's philosophy as I do about Elton Gallegly's. He is not a member of the "Chicken Little Society" who go around screaming "The sky is falling." Elton tries to think situations through and then present his ideas to his constituents in a logical, understandable way.

If Elton Gallegly accomplishes just one thing--controlling those who cross our borders illegally only to reap our generous welfare benefits--this man will have accomplished one impossible dream of this generation.
