Fred McGriff left the San Diego Padres' lineup before their game Thursday because of injury, amid rumors the first baseman will be traded to the Atlanta Braves.

Both teams said no deal was imminent.

Brave spokesman Jim Schultz said he was given no indication when he spoke to General Manager John Schuerholz that a trade was about to happen.

Milwaukee Brewer pitcher Mike Boddicker, who helped the Baltimore Orioles win the 1983 World Series, said he is retiring. Boddicker, 35, was acquired from the Kansas City Royals on April 26 and compiled a 3-5 record with a 5.67 ERA in 10 starts for the Brewers. Boddicker had a 134-116 career record with a 3.80 ERA. . . . Brewer infielder Dickie Thon remained home in Puerto Rico, suffering from a viral infection. He was put on the 15-day disabled list. . . . Boston's Roger Clemens was activated from the disabled list and will start against Seattle tonight. . . . Nolan Ryan of the Texas Rangers will make his first start since May 7 on Monday night at home against Milwaukee. . . . Cincinnati All-Star outfielder Bobby Kelly has a separated shoulder rather than a sprain, as first thought. . . . The condition of Toronto third base coach Rich Hacker, who was injured in a car accident Sunday night, has been upgraded from serious to fair.
