LOS ANGELES : Murderer Faces Trial in Secret Service Agent Death

July 21, 1993

A judge this week ordered a convicted triple murderer to stand trial in the 1980 slaying of the first female U.S. Secret Service agent to die in the line of duty.

Andre Alexander is accused of murdering Agent Julie Cross on June 4, 1980. He is serving a life term for killing three people in 1978. He was charged with Cross' slaying in October, two years after his arrest for the 1978 murders.

Los Angeles Municipal Judge Mary Waters ruled that there is "reasonable cause" to order Alexander to stand trial and set an Aug. 2 arraignment in Superior Court. Cross and her partner were ambushed by armed robbers while working a stakeout on an unrelated counterfeit case near Los Angeles International Airport. Alexander, who is serving a life sentence at the state prison in Corcoran for the triple murder, could face the death penalty if convicted.
