MALIBU : Officials Drop Support for Camping Resort

July 22, 1993

Los Angeles County officials have withdrawn their support for a controversial camping resort near Malibu, ruling that a developer should have been required to obtain a conditional-use permit before the county approved the project in 1991.

The officials said that construction of the Latigo Ranch Resort will not be allowed until the permit is obtained, adding that developer Irwin (Red) Lachman probably will also be required to prepare an environmental impact report.

Opponents had accused the county of favoring the developer after an official in 1991 approved the project while exempting the developer from obtaining the permit or preparing the report.

Supporters hail the project as a prototype for camping resorts of the future. It is to have a restaurant, fitness center, tennis and basketball courts, two swimming pools, an arts and crafts pavilion, an outdoor amphitheater and 123 tent-cabins with kitchens and baths that will rent for up to $125 a night.
