LOS ANGELES : Bail Denied for Suspect in Mail-Bomb Death

July 22, 1993

A federal magistrate judge in Los Angeles denied bail Wednesday for an ex-Jewish Defense League activist accused in the 1980 mail-bomb death of a Manhattan Beach secretary.

In refusing to set bail for Robert Manning, 41, U.S. Magistrate Judge Volney B. Brown cited the potential life sentence facing the defendant, and his years-long effort to fight extradition from Israel. Brown, noting Manning's convictions for violent crimes in this country and in Israel, said the defendant poses a danger to society. The defendant had sought to be detained at home on an electronic anklet. Attorney Richard Sherman said his client fought extradition because he did not believe an Israeli citizen should be extradited.
