Norwalk : Council Backs Higher Fees, Opposes Trash Service Cuts

July 22, 1993

The City Council tentatively approved on Tuesday a $1.49 increase in quarterly trash collection fees.

Homeowners' bills are expected to rise 4.5%, from $35.03 to $36.52, for each three-month period.

Council members had considered cutting services but decided on the higher fees so trash pickup can continue to include large items such as furniture and appliances.

Trash collection is provided by Consolidated Disposal Service of Santa Fe Springs and Jackson Disposal Service of Whittier. The firms had asked for a 13.1% increase. But the city, which sets trash rates annually, followed the advice of an outside consultant that a 4.5% hike would guarantee the companies a profit.

The council is expected to give final approval to the increase Aug. 3.
