Westchester : Westchester Parkway Opens

July 22, 1993

The $28.4-million Westchester Parkway, a six-lane highway connecting Pershing Drive to Sepulveda Westway, opened Saturday, 18 months behind schedule.

The 2.25-mile parkway was originally ordered by city planners to handle traffic generated by a proposed hotel-office complex on the north side of Los Angeles International Airport. Because of the recession and a glut in hotel rooms and office space, the development was put on hold indefinitely--but the parkway project continued nonetheless.

According to a news release from Councilwoman Ruth Galanter's office, the roadway will improve access to Westchester's central business district and ease commuter traffic on Culver Boulevard in Playa del Rey.

It was completed earlier this year after lengthy construction delays and cost overruns that officials last year estimated at $400,000. A sluggish permit-granting process further stalled the opening.

Saturday's festivities were attended by Galanter and Mayor Richard Riordan.
