Crenshaw : Indoor Pool Reopens

July 22, 1993

The Rancho Cienega swimming pool was reopened last week after being closed more than two years for repairs.

"People are enthusiastic about this," said Rancho Cienega Park director Bara King. "We've been closed for so long, they're glad to get it back."

The indoor pool, at 5001 Rodeo Road, was rededicated in a weekend ceremony sponsored by the Recreation and Parks Department and attended by Councilman Nate Holden and city recreation supervisors.

The facility was closed in 1991 because of leaking and water circulation problems, said pool assistant manager Albert Ringgold. In addition to a new foundation, the 20-meter pool was refurbished with new filters, a heating system and dehumidifier. About $250,000 worth of improvements and repairs were begun in November and completed this month.

Ringgold said business has been brisk at the pool since it reopened. "We had 300 people in here the first day," he said. "We've been averaging 200 and 300 a day. It's great, considering we haven't really put the word out yet."

The facility offers a variety of courses for children and adults, including water aerobics, and swimming lessons and training. Summer swimming lessons are free. The pool is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $1.25 for adults, 75 cents for children and 50 cents for seniors.
