Royal Savings From the Party King : Store offers a wide selection of cards and paper goods at 20% to 50% below retail.

It wasn't so very long ago that greeting cards were less than $1 and paper plates seemed like a worthwhile alternative to a sink full of dirty dishes. Now, cards are approaching the cost of a gift and prices for paper tabletop items can negate their usage altogether. Unless, of course, you know where to go to hold those costs down.

The place to know is Party King Discount in Tarzana, where cards are 50% off retail and paper goods are 20% to 50% below retail.

The selection of greeting cards covers all categories: birthday wishes for specific ages, moms, dads, brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, grandparents and in-laws. All special occasions seem to be covered, from christenings and graduations to weddings and anniversaries. Religious cards are also represented.

Carlton, Magic Moments, Pleasant Thoughts, Image Arts and Gallant are among the major card manufacturers whose products are found; these retail from $1.50 to $2. Deduct half of that--and this price cut applies to all the cards.

In paper table accessories, Contempo is one of the quality companies. Its paper plates earn a 24-point rating, the industry's highest standard for the heaviest board stock available. The seven-inch size has a suggested price of $4.20 for a package of 25, but Party King Discount's price is $2.09. Fifty three-ply matching cocktail napkins are $1.99, instead of the $4.10 marked on the package.

Few stores provide wrapping paper in continuous lengths, but Party King Discount does. Purchasing wrappings this way can end those frustrating sessions trying to wrap large gifts with packaged cut sheets. The price range on some truly handsome papers (solids, florals, stripes and foils) measuring 26 inches to 30 inches wide and mounted on wall rollers is $1.37 to $1.97 for a five-foot length. Since a standard gift wrap roll is five feet long and sells for $3.50, the savings by buying in bulk runs between $1.50 to more than $2.

There's also a good break at Party King on printed personalized social invitations for weddings, bar mitzvahs, etc. Figure 25% off on the Regency and Carlton lines, and 15% off on Encore and Elite.

Party King's Frequent Buyers Club makes for additional savings. Buy $200 in merchandise and you get a $20 store credit, plus a free balloon bouquet.
