Sources of Pond Inspiration

July 24, 1993|MARESA ARCHER

To view established ponds for ideas, there are several public ponds in the county.

Sherman Library & Gardens in Corona del Mar has a koi pond in the conservatory along with two formal cement ponds outside in the garden.

The Fullerton Arboretum at the Cal State Fullerton campus off Associated Road has a good example of a natural-looking pond. It is larger than the usual back-yard pond and features carnivorous plants--also not found in most residential ponds. But it is lined with a variety of native plants that would be well suited to a smaller pond.

San Joaquin Marsh near UCI off Campus Drive between Jamboree Road and University Drive is a large saltwater marsh teaming with wildlife.

Just next door is the UCI Arboretum, which has two fish ponds planted with both native and exotic plants. The arboretum is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
