William Oscar Gutierrez; Social Worker for Latino Youths

William Oscar (Bill) Gutierrez, 77, pioneering social worker for Latino youth. Setting an example he would later describe to poor Latino gang members, Gutierrez obtained higher education at Oxford University while he was based in England during World War II, and later completed his degree at UCLA and performed postgraduate work at USC. After beginning his career as a social worker for the state, he became a youth-gang worker in the group guidance unit of the Los Angeles County Probation Department. He later worked for the Human Relations Commission and the Narcotics Information Service of the Department of Community Services. After his retirement, Gutierrez served on the Los Angeles County grand jury and was president of the Community Advisory Board to East Los Angeles College. On Sunday in Arcadia.
