EARNINGS

July 29, 1993

Digital Equipment Corp. reported its first quarterly profit since 1991, posting net income of $113.1 million after months of layoffs and reorganizing. But while Digital Chief Executive Robert Palmer said the company was "poised for resurgence," another executive warned that the computer maker could have difficulty making money next quarter. The company's fiscal fourth-quarter earnings amounted to 85 cents per share. It contrasted with a loss of $1.85 billion, or $14.76 per share, a year earlier. That loss included a major onetime charge to pay for layoffs and plant closings. The Maynard, Mass.-based computer maker said revenues grew slightly to $3.91 billion, compared to $3.9 billion in the same period last year.
