LOS ANGELES : 2.5 Million Ride Red Line in First 6 Months of Service

August 03, 1993

Since the Red Line subway opened six months ago, it has carried almost 2.5 million people, transit officials reported.

Each weekday, about 15,000 passengers ride the first four-mile leg of the subway, which runs between Union Station and MacArthur Park. On weekends, about 10,000 ride the $1.4-billion line, transit officials said.

Although transit officials initially intended to raise the introductory fare of 25 cents to $1.10, they decided not to increase the fare in hopes of winning more passengers.

Los Angeles' first modern subway opened Jan. 30. When the 22.7-mile system is complete, it will fan out in three directions with lines to the Eastside, North Hollywood and the Mid City, Pico/San Vicente area.
