BURBANK — A nursing home attendant was sentenced to eight years in prison Tuesday for raping an elderly woman at a convalescent home, authorities said.
A Pasadena Superior Court jury convicted Marcial Cruz, 33, of Burbank last month in connection with an attack in September at Burbank Convalescent Hospital at 2710 Olive Ave., authorities said.
An employee purportedly witnessed the attack and reported it to hospital administrators, police said. Police subsequently learned of the incident from a friend of an employee at the hospital and Cruz was arrested Nov. 13.
After Cruz's arrest, police and county authorities launched an investigation into whether hospital administrators followed state requirements on reporting incidents of elder abuse. Police were unavailable to comment on the status of that investigation Tuesday night.
