Atwater Village : Donations for Thrift Store

August 05, 1993

Out of the Closet Thrift Store, which benefits AIDS victims, is seeking donations of used clothing and household items--and a truck.

"Without a truck (to pick up the items), there's a significant decrease in donations," said Rosie Whiteman, manager of the store at 3160 Glendale Blvd. "Most people don't have enough room in their vehicles to drop off the large items like furniture and appliances, or large loads of clothing."

Profits directly support the AIDS Health Care Foundation, which operates medical and residential hospice care to people with HIV/AIDS in Los Angeles County, said Keith Malone, the nonprofit agency's communications coordinator.

The foundation serves about 2,000 clients at its two clinics: in Hollywood at 1300 N. Vermont Ave., and in downtown Los Angeles at 1414 S. Grand Ave. Its hospice care has served 1,000 people since the foundation opened in 1987.

The foundation makes about $100,000 profit a year from the store.
