POP MUSIC CHARTS

Simply Smashing

August 15, 1993

The alternative rock quartet Smashing Pumpkins is still doing strong business in the hard-rock market with its new "Siamese Dream," No. 3 on The Times' Southern California hard rock chart. These sales figures place it at No. 15 on the pop chart. All this is a surprise: The album was expected to do well, but not as well as it has so far. But the chart surprise of the year is still the dominance of the "Sleepless in Seattle" soundtrack, which continues to attract buyers with a bizarre mix of romantic tunes by artists such as Gene Autry and Carly Simon.
