Sierra Madre : Interim Police Chief Named

August 15, 1993

Retired Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Capt. John Thurman has been named Sierra Madre's interim police chief.

Thurman, 58, replaces Chief I. E. (Bill) Betts, who retired Aug. 6 after 17 years as head of the 20-officer department.

During his 90-day temporary stint, Thurman will evaluate Police Department operations and help select the permanent chief.

A former commander at the Altadena sheriff's station and a past custody commander at the Peter J. Pitchess Honor Rancho, Thurman has 32 years' experience in law enforcement. During that time, he also worked for the San Marino Police Department.
