Hispanics Sought for Education Program

August 16, 1993

Azusa Pacific University has been awarded a $200,000 grant for a program to prepare qualified Hispanics to teach elementary school in the San Gabriel Valley.

The grant, from the Weingart Foundation of Los Angeles, will help train Hispanic educators for effective classroom teaching and community leadership. Fifteen candidates will be recruited, mentored and prepared for a career in education. Each will earn a bachelor's degree and a teaching credential.

Azusa Pacific's program will be conducted in collaboration with the Azusa, Baldwin Park, and Covina Valley unified school districts, where the percentage of Hispanic students exceeds the state level.

For information regarding the teaching program, contact the School of Education and Behavioral Studies at (818) 815-5376.
