Philips Puts Bright Idea Into Its Bulbs

August 17, 1993|Bloomberg Business News

For the average person wondering just when the incandescent light would quit being such a dim bulb, Philips Lighting Co. has an answer: the smart bulb.

Impregnated with computer circuitry, three kinds of brainy bulbs can turn themselves off, dim and brighten, or stay lit after burning out.

Philips calls its IQ Lighting, to be introduced early next year, "the first true innovation of the incandescent light bulb in over 100 years."

And the price will reflect such brilliance: $3.99 to $4.99 apiece.
