Monterey Park : Youths Donate 22,000 Hours

August 22, 1993

Monterey Park youths have donated 22,000 volunteer hours in the city's Summer Youth Employment and Training Program, city officials said.

Ninety teen-agers, ages 15 through 19, are helping with clerical, maintenance and child-care duties in several departments, including police, library and recreation and parks. Volunteers were recruited through local youth agencies for the 10-week program, which ends Labor Day. They have saved the city about $238,000 in labor costs, Recreation and Parks Director Larry Reihm said.

The city has had a few volunteers from local high schools in the past. But this year, because of severe budget cuts, city officials and several local agencies started a citywide effort to recruit teen-agers, Reihm said.
