El Segundo Wins Legion Opener

August 22, 1993

El Segundo opened the American Legion Southwestern Regional with a 17-10 victory over Clark of Las Vegas on Friday night in Las Vegas.

Marco Estrada had four hits to lead a 17-hit attack and David Scanlan pitched four innings of relief to earn the victory.

With El Segundo trailing, 2-0, Scanlan (10-1) relieved starter David Reed with no outs and the bases loaded in the third inning and got out of the jam without giving up a run. Scanlan had seven strikeouts in four innings, leaving after the sixth with a 12-3 lead.

El Segundo scored eight runs in the fourth to take an 8-2 lead, and added four runs in the fifth. Jamin Kear and Jake Coulter highlighted the fourth with back-to-back, run-scoring doubles.

El Segundo played Hawaii in a late game Saturday night. The double-elimination tournament ends Tuesday and the winner advances to Friday's World Series at Roseburg, Ore.
